While attending college, Tim became an assistant to famed commercial photographer, Bruce Weber. His love of competition drew him to compete in track and he eventually began training with the elite Santa Monica Track Club as a sprinter. From 1985 to 1987, he was fortunate to have been able to have privileged training from photographers George Philips and Robert Jones.
By late 1988, Wolcott began showing his Black & White photographs with the Association of International Photography Art Dealers (AIPAD) - one of the youngest photographers ever to show with the AIPAD at this time. In 1991 he began showing his color photography with the AIPAD.
In 1992 he was part of a group of three to pioneer the Evercolor Pigment Printing System - the culmination of Ansel Adams' lifelong goal to attain pigment printing for photography. This process was the first of its kind, allowing the photographer to produce truly archival photographs with the saturation and tonal brilliance that had never been achieved before, except in black and white photography. In 1995 he started his practice of consultation with digital technology companies which continues to this day. Throughout 1995 to 1996, Tim began his experimentation with many technologies to try to perfect the merger of old/conventional printing processes with modern day technology. In 1996, Tim's work showed at PhotoKina in Cologne, Germany.
In 1997, at a convention of the Fine Art Printmakers Association, he met the head conservationist from the Smithsonian. This introduction allowed him to propose a project which would combine his talent in photography and love of history with the knowledge he had gained while consulting with cutting edge printing technology companies. Tim proposed employing the technology to create exact replicas of extremely rare ephemera, such as photographs and documents, so that copies could be created for the public to enjoy. Until this point, the rarity of these artifacts and their incredible monetary value had prohibited this.
In the past few years, Tim has developed and even invented several printing processes. He has mastered the art of silver gelatin, platinum palladium, and carbon printing. He has continued to push the boundaries of color printing by inventing new papers and coatings to achieve the highest standards in fine art color printing. Ansel Adams once said, "A photographer is only half a photographer if he does not shoot and develop his own photographs." Tim believes in order to achieve one's greatest potential, one must be able to control every nuance of one's art.
I borrow from the masters before me and with the new printing technologies I've achieved, I'm keeping the traditions alive and creating my own unique style of art.
This combination of a love of history reflected through photography and his use of his new printing techniques has allowed Wolcott to start Save Our Art. Save Our Art's mission is to preserve our legacy of photography from the ravages of time and other destructive forces. Working with other archives and private collections, Save Our Art has employed the combination of advanced printing technologies, knowledge of historical processes, and photographic techniques to preserve a wide range of of documentation and art. This passion has not only preserved the Wright Brothers photographs, but has also been applied to other works with the Smithsonian, VanOrder collection, and Great Sioux chief by J. A. Anderson while many more earmarked for preservation. The processes and collections were featured on PBS in 2003.
In 1999, Tim opened a gallery in Big Bear Lake, California, which is dedicated to featuring some of the best works in the United States. The Gallery of the American Landscape has and will display some of the best works by renowned artists throughout the world.
Tim Wolcott's photographs are included in many numerous private, public, and corporate collections worldwide; including the Guggenheim, Smithsonian, Photokina, Microsoft, Kaiser Permanante, Chevron, and the Nature Conservancy. His photography graces the walls of many world class galleries; Fahey Klein Gallery, Photography West, Vision Gallery, Photocollect, Grubel Gallery, and Gallery of the American Landscape just to name a few.
